I’m sew cool!

maxine August 6th, 2008

Believe me when I say that I’m not particularly artsy nor crafty. I draw like a five-year old. I hate scrapbooking with a fiery passion (it’s to do with staying up till all hours of the night to make them for the “graduating” kids at work). I tried quilting once, but stopped about 3/4 of the way in when I realized I hated it. I can knit and enjoy doing so, but I’m painfully slow at it - it takes me nearly a year to make one baby blanket (and that’s if I work on it a lot). My mom tried teaching me to sew when I was a kid, but we both soon discovered that I was fairly inept at it. With this pathetic history in mind, I unveil my latest accomplishment: Lined blackout curtains for Isaac’s room!

I’m kind of really proud of myself for making these. So what if they’re about as easy as sewing projects get? I think I did a mighty fine job, thank you very much! I even channeled my inner frugal saver and managed to get a bunch of normally very expensive fabric on a lovely clearance. Next up will be curtains for our own bedroom (the fabric will be the inverse of Isaac’s pattern, minus the bears).

I’m sew impressed you busted those out. Nothing like getting something on clearance either!

Well done Maxine, the pictures are cute but I have to say that the curtains are even cuter in person. Why leave the bears out for your room? They look so darling in Isaac’s room they would probably look good throughout the house!

Ahh, yes…the “curtain high”…I’ve had it many times myself. Thank goodness there is something that even us laymen can make with pleasing results.

Good job! They’re very cute. I don’t think I would’ve had the patience to do all the tab-tops. Kudos to you!

Considering I don’t even know how to sew a button, I consider you the Martha Steward of crafts. Good for you! Those curtins look awesome.

Thanks for your note - yep, she said it was a contraction but that was 11am yesterday and I haven’t felt a THING since. Boo hoo. Thanks for the labor vibes!! :)

Look at that. My little girl’s gone and growed up enough to make domestic sun-blocking devices that a) apparently function and b) look good while doing it. I say Kudos, congrats, and excellent work my young sewing padowan.

I’m seriously impressed. I’m similarly sewing inept. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, considering we’re secretly (or not-so-secretly) the same person.

And the bears are the cutest thing ever. You should choose some other animal for your room - perhaps giraffes? Or piglets? Or baby turtles?

Those look great! I’m getting a sewing machine for my birthday and I’m terrified!! I don’t know the first thing, including how to thread it! But I have a huge pile of clothes that need mending and can’t put it off any longer! I need to get Sewing For Dummies… maybe someday I can make curtains as good as yours!

Erika, don’t you remember those rockin’ ones you made at Brentwood?!

I did hand sew curtains for one of our apartments… it was so funny to drive by 2 years later and see that they were still there!

Maxine those really do look great! The bears are so cute and I love the color scheme!

Thanks! I’m almost done with the curtains for our bedroom - it only took one day to make those! I guess practice makes faster. I have a sewing machine, but I’m definitely no seamstress. Still, this project inspires me to want to make more stuff, like little baby dresses and pj’s for all!
